3.) MessageLabs: MessageLabs Intelligence Report: Small Businesses in the Line of Fire

MessageLabs, a leading provider of integrated messaging and web security services to businesses worldwide, today announced the results of its MessageLabs Intelligence Report for March 2007. Quarter on quarter spam levels have raised to 76.3 percent, their highest in two years. Virus and botnet activity has also increased. The report highlights the impact of increased spam levels on small-to-medium sized businesses (SMBs) as these organizations receive more than double the volume of spam per user each month than in enterprise organizations.

While spam levels for the month of March decreased by 2.6 percent from February, MessageLabs saw an overall increase in spam for the first quarter of 2007. Spammers do not distinguish between the sizes of organizations being targeted; smaller businesses will receive just as much spam as larger enterprises but are less likely to have defense systems in place. For small businesses, spam can very quickly become a silent killer, overwhelming the reso...

4.) Cloudmark, Inc.: Cloudmark & Simplicita Team to Protect Service Provider Networks From Zombies and Botnets

Cloudmark, the proven leader in real-time messaging security, announced today that it has joined forces with Simplicita, the company that frees carrier networks from zombies and botnets, to equip Internet Service Providers (ISPs) with real-time capabilities to detect and disinfect bot-controlled machines on their networks. Rob Fleischman, chief technology officer at Simplicita predicts that, "Within three ...

5.) Prevx: Prevx Protects Consumers, Businesses Against Millionth Unique Malicious Program; Uncovers New Automated Pretexting Malware

A new form of spyware attack by malicious software which uses automated pretexting is among the most recent type of malware identified by security researchers at Prevx, a leading developer of Automated Malware Research. The revelation comes as the security company today announced it had detected and provided protection against more than one million unique malicious programs seen by its community intrusion prevention system since it was launched in July 2005. Prevx's automated malware research identifies new malicious software much faster than conventional vendor research labs which are facing ever growing backlogs as they struggle to cope with the exponential growth in malware volumes.

"Prevx has recorded a sad statistic in capturing data about the millionth unique malware program it has detected and prevented since the project was launched just over one year ago," said Mel Morris, Prevx CEO. "Even more startling is that the increasing volume of malware seen by our community of use...

8.) GFI Software Ltd.: GFI Warns One Anti-Virus Engine Is Not Enough to Protect Your Business

GFI, a leading provider of network security, content security and messaging software, today issued a stark warning to businesses across the United States about the dangers of deploying a single anti-virus engine.

GFI's new white paper, "Why one virus engine is not enough," reveals that organizations relying on the protection of a single anti-virus engine are actually leaving themselves exposed to a severe and constant threat from all forms of malware. The white paper outlines the fact that even though every anti-virus vendor in the market claims to have a fast response time, there is no single company that will consistently be the first and fastest to respond to a virus outbreak. Depending on a single anti-virus engine does not guarantee the quickest reaction to outbreaks every time, leaving productivity and business operations vulnerable to attack.

In addition, different anti-virus engines have different strengths and weaknesses. Some engines excel at identifying a certain typ...

The discussion will include data and analysis of Cloudmark's successes in applying a collaborative filter originally designed for anti-spam to the anti-virus problem. Cloudmark's results from specific case studies will be discussed, including the CME-24 outbreak of early 2006. O'Donnell will show that not only is a collaborative filter effective for filtering viruses, but that the large reporter base enables the filter to begin acting on the virus within minutes of its initial sighting with an extremely low false positive rate. O'Donnell will present Cloudmark's findings on Friday morning, October...
